Born in Switzerland, Desirée Schmid moved with her family to Malta when she was only 7 years old. Desirée first came in touch with horses when she was 4 and started riding at the age of 5. At the age of 13 she started training for local trainer Tommy Xeureb and has frequently travelled to Switzerland to train show jumping. Aged only 15, Desirée moved her two show jumpers to Germany and went back and forth between Malta and Germany to handle school in Malta and training and competing for Malta internationally as a junior.
In 2010, she moved on to Switzerland to stable with Olympic Silver medallist Christina Liebherr and trained with Christina’s trainer Susanne Behring before moving to the neighbouring stable, where she now keeps her three competition horses. Desiree has continued training for Susanne Behring but her main trainer is now Christian Sottas.
Desirée has made Malta proud with her success up to Junior Grand Prix (140 cm) with her top horse Sambuco and is hoping for great achievements with her newest horse Calistos La Paz. This year, Desirée is hoping to qualify for the Junior European Championships.
Whilst living abroad and training on top level, Desirée still enjoyes a close bond with her family and her riding sisters in Malta and regularly goes back to Malta to train and sometimes compete in local competitions.
